Dragon CRS-9 arrives at ISS

A SpaceX Falcon 9 took off from Cape Canaveral on July 18, 2016 with a commercial cargo craft on its way to the International Space Station. This is the CRS-9 mission, the ninth Commercial Resupply Service to the ISS.

The First Stage of the Falcon 9 v1.2 successfully returned to Florida’s Space Coast for a dramatic nightime landing at Landing Zone 1 (LZ1). This was the second time that a Falcon 9 First Stage landed on LZ1, the first time happened on Dec 2015 during the second mission of OrbComm OG2. (Link)

The Falcon 9 rocket is the upgraded version 1.2 or “Full Thrust”.

On July 20, 2016, the Dragon wrapped up a two day trip to the ISS delivering the new International Docking Adapter 2 (IDA-2) and two tons of equipment for research.

Astronaut Jeff Williams, at the control of the station’s Canada arm, grappled the Dragon spacecraft and maneuvered it to the Earth facing port (Nadir) of the Harmony Node 2 module.

Flying in the external trunk section of Dragon is possibly the most important component delivered by the CRS-9 mission: the International Docking Adapter 2 (IDA-2)
This is a critical device needed in the conversion of the Station’s Space Shuttle Docking Ports to conform with the International Docking Standard employed by the Commercial Crew vehicles for their first test flights late next year. IDA-1 was lost in the CRS-7 launch failure.

IDA-2 will be removed from Dragon using the Station’s Robotic Arm and DEXTRE robot and will be attached to the Pressurized Mating Adapter 2 (PMA-2) on the forward port of Harmony which supported 35 Shuttle visits to the ISS. An EVA will take place on August 19 by Jeff Williams and Kate Rubins that will finish the installation of IDA-2 by mating various electrical and commodity connections between PMA-2 and IDA-2.

UPDATE: AUG 17, 2016

  3. Hi there! At first I’d like to say a big thank you for your great models, they make pretty fun!
I also want to report that the pdf of the CRS-9 model is damaged or at least the Acrobatreader refuses to open the file. Anyway thanks! :)
